Ghosts of 1972-73

Check out the match scorecard from 1972-73 Australia v Pakistan. Several interesting anecdotes:

  • Greg Chappell's 5 first innings wickets
  • Ross Edwards catch at cover point from Sadiq Mohammad was the finest I've seen in that position. It was travelling like a tracer bullet until he dived full length and forward to his right
  • Max Walker's 6-15 got the attention with his big hooping inswingers and leg cutters but it was Lillee's three wickets and long stint at the bowling crease which won the game and also broke his back

  1. Interesting scorecard. We were effectively 8-75 when Watkins & Massie rescued the innings as did Hussey & Siddle. One big difference however is that this Sydney pitch did not have demons in it. The Paki's created the pressure in their heads then produced the get out shots that come when the mind is uncertain. In the past the majority of 4th innings failures in Sydney has been when the wicket is worn, spinning and keeping low, not so this time.

I come back to what I said at the start of the summer. This team of Aussies have been given a soft run and their actual quality has not been tested and will not until India, England and SA play us. As good as Hussey played he was dropped 4 times and the fielding of the Paki,s is at times park standard. If Pakistan ever accept that a good coach and players listening and applying the coaches methodology is needed and embraced then their potential is there, however I think they have this invisible curtain up against professionalism.

I think the Aussie bowlers are going OK and every Test is a good learning curve that will keep them in good stead against better opposition, but the batting is shaky. Other than Watson and to a degree Katich there is not a batsman that is going to the crease with an expectation of scoring a big score, there is a doubt about them as they step out. Ponting, Clarke and Hussey have in the past sent a message to the bowlers almost immediately that the ball was a watermelon and indeed have transferred that message into big scores, but at the moment that is not happening.
